In this case, the vent flashing was not designed or installed to manage the amount of water flowing through the valley. Over time, water penetrated beneath the shingles, bypassed the flashing, and repeatedly soaked the roof decking below.
Hidden Roof Decking Damage Revealed
Once the shingles were removed, the full extent of the damage became clear. The roof decking in the valley had experienced long-term moisture exposure and had begun to rot. This type of roof decking damage is common in older or improperly installed roofs across the Gulf Coast, where prolonged humidity and rainfall accelerate deterioration.
Because of the severity of the damage, two sections of roof decking had to be replaced to restore the structural integrity of the roof before new materials could be installed.

After replacing the damaged decking, we rebuilt the valley using proper installation methods and corrected the roof vent placement to ensure adequate separation from the valley. We installed appropriate underlayment, high-quality flashing, and integrated the shingles correctly to protect against future leaks.
